Anna Kournikova: Tennis Champion

Anna Kournikova, a highly successful tennis player, was born on June 7, 1981 in Moscow, Soviet Union. Her family later emigrated to the United States. By the time Kournikova had entered her early teens she had earned moderate success in the international junior tennis rounds, including wins in the 1995 Italian Open. At 14 she was a Junior European Champion Under 18 as well as ITF Junior World Champion under 18. That same year she made her debut as a professional tennis player in the Fed Cup, playing for Russia. When she won, she became the youngest player to ever participate in that tournament and win it. The next year she competed in the U.S. Open and made it to the fourth round before she was halted by Steffi Graf, the top-ranked player at the time. In 1996 she also participated in the Olympic Games as part of the Russian delegation.

At age 16, Kournikova made it to the semi-finals at Wimbeldon and then went on to break into the WTAs top 20 rankings. Here, she pulled in wins over such players as Steffi Graf and Lindsay Davenport. By 1999 and 2002 she had achieved two Grand Slam doubles titles. This became the beginning of a highly successful doubles career on the professional circuit, allowing her to eventually rack up 16 doubles tournament titles.

In addition to her highly successful tennis career, Anna Kournikova has also achieved success as a model, appearing in ads for Berlei’s sports bras as well as appearing in Sports Illustrated.
